If a pregnancy test result just turned your world upside down, take a breath. You do not have to have answers right now. What you do need is accurate information, and that starts with knowing what is actually happening inside your body. An ultrasound is one of the clearest ways to get there.

Whether you are thinking through your options or simply trying to know where things stand, an ultrasound gives you the kind of information that a pregnancy testing result alone can provide. At Elevate Women’s Center, our compassionate staff offers free ultrasounds so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

The Science Behind the Screen

A 2-D ultrasound works by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body through a small handheld device called a transducer. Those waves travel through tissue, bounce back, and are converted into real-time images on a screen.

There is no radiation involved, and the procedure is considered safe. Depending on the gestational age (how far along you are), the ultrasound may be performed abdominally or transvaginally to obtain a more precise image.

What the Ultrasound Image Shows

Pregnancy testing detects hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), the hormone your body produces during pregnancy. But a positive result only tells part of the story. An ultrasound reveals the details of your pregnancy and your available choices.

Is the pregnancy in the uterus?

One of the most urgent things an ultrasound checks is the location of the pregnancy.

When a pregnancy implants outside the uterus, typically in a fallopian tube, it is called an ectopic pregnancy. This is a serious medical condition that cannot develop into a healthy, sustainable pregnancy and, if left untreated, can become life-threatening. Knowing this early is not just important; it is critical.

What is the gestational age (how far along you are)?

An ultrasound estimates gestational age and your due date. Knowing exactly how far along you are is an important piece of information before making any decisions or plans, ensuring you always have the full picture first.

Is the pregnancy progressing?

Viability refers to whether a pregnancy appears to be developing as expected. An ultrasound can often detect a fetal heartbeat as early as six weeks. Because miscarriage affects an estimated 10 to 20% of known pregnancies, confirming viability helps you know whether you experienced an early loss or if the pregnancy is truly progressing.
