Who Is Eligible For Abortion?
Eligibility for abortion depends on several factors: legality, pregnancy gestation, pre-existing conditions, and safety considerations.
Legality
Arkansas currently bans abortion. This ban means it’s not an option in this state. However, other states have different laws and restrictions, leading many women to travel.
Pregnancy Gestation
Pregnancy gestation refers to how far along you are in your pregnancy. An ultrasound scan can help determine the date. Some state abortion laws include gestational limits to consider.
In the United States, medication abortion is only FDA-approved for use within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. After this time, an abortion provider might recommend surgical abortion.

Mayo Clinic states medical abortion is not an option if a woman is too far along, has an IUD currently in place, has an ectopic pregnancy, has certain medical conditions, takes a blood thinner, or has an allergy to the drugs.
Since medical abortion is self-managed at home, having a lack of access to follow-up visits or emergency care would also make this procedure unsafe.
Safety Considerations
There are some other factors to check before considering traveling for an abortion. Getting an ultrasound can verify that you haven’t miscarried and don’t have an ectopic pregnancy.
These complications can be legally treated in Arkansas and require different treatment methods.
