3 Reasons You Need an Ultrasound Before an Abortion
If you’re in Arkansas and considering abortion, you’re likely already thinking about traveling out of state. Before you make that trip, there’s one medical step that protects your health no matter what you decide next.
Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Elevate Women’s Center to get a lab-quality pregnancy test and ultrasound before moving forward.
A positive pregnancy test only detects the hormone hCG in your body. A test does not confirm that the pregnancy is viable, which is confirmed by a fetal heartbeat. Between 10 and 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and hCG can remain in the body for days or weeks after a loss.
If a miscarriage has already occurred, pregnancy-related options, including abortion, would no longer apply. An ultrasound confirms whether the pregnancy is still progressing before any next steps are taken.
A pregnancy should develop inside the uterus. In some cases, a fertilized egg implants elsewhere, most often in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy and cannot be treated with an abortion procedure. Ectopic pregnancies can become life-threatening if they go undetected and require immediate medical care. An ultrasound identifies the location early.
Gestational age affects which procedures are medically appropriate. Medical abortion, for example, is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Dates based on a last menstrual period can be inaccurate, particularly with irregular cycles. An ultrasound provides a more reliable measurement.
