If you have taken mifepristone, the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, and regret your decision, there is hope. You may be able to continue the pregnancy.

A protocol called Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) may be able to help. It’s critical to seek support and information as soon as possible. You can contact us at 479-487-2456 during our business hours (Monday through Friday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm). For after-hours help, please contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network’s 24/7 Helpline.

What is APR?

APR works to potentially counteract the effects of mifepristone, so it’s essential to know how the abortion pill ends a pregnancy.

The first drug is mifepristone, which blocks a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone helps the pregnancy develop and grow, so without this hormone, the pregnancy detaches from the uterine lining and ends.

Misoprostol is taken next. This drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy from the body.

APR administers doses of progesterone orally, vaginally, or intramuscularly to try to outcompete the effects of mifepristone. This protocol has the highest chance of allowing the pregnancy to continue if begun within 24-48 hours after taking mifepristone.

Is Taking Progesterone Safe?

There are no known complications or harmful effects associated with taking progesterone, and it has been used to support pregnancy development and reduce the risk of miscarriage for over 50 years.

Additionally, no evidence indicates an increased risk of birth defects greater than that of the general population. Research has found that APR allowed women to continue their pregnancy in 64-68% of cases.

If you wish to continue your pregnancy, it’s important to act promptly and speak to a provider who can help. You deserve clarity, and support is available.
